We repair music boxes of various kinds, from small single tune boxes to complicated multi tune boxes such as the one shown here.
Below are photos showing some of the steps we went through in the process of repairing this box. |
A small pinion gear in the governor assembly was badly damaged and a new one needed to be made using a cutter that we acquired from England. Here we are preparing to machine a pivot on the end of the tiny pinion. |
The frame of the music box was sanded to bare metal and repainted gold. |
John Crombe straightens pins on the barrel. If the pins are bent over even a few thousandths of an inch, they will not sound correctly. |
A decorative lyre attachment is being prepared for Sterling silver leaf. |
Silver leaf is much thinner than paper and can be tricky to control and apply. |
Here the repaired and refinished parts are ready to be reassembled. Even the heads of the screws were polished in the lathe. |
Our gear cutting equipment is capable of making pretty much any gear needed for this kind of repair. |
On the right is a new gear made for the mainspring winding system. On the left is the old damaged gear. |
The completed music movement is reinstalled in the cabinet.
